What a shell can and cannot do
Plastic shells that turn one AA cell into a C or a D size. Sold alone, as a C and D set, and with AA cells in the box.
A C or D adapter holds one eneloop AA. The device sees the right size and the right voltage, and runs on the charge of that single AA. A real D cell holds several times more, so a lantern on adapters needs swapping sooner. The shell is what lets you keep one set of cells and one charger for the whole house.
Panasonic’s FAQ calls adapters a temporary fix and asks you to take the AA out to charge it. The shell never goes into a charger.
The shells fit any AA cell in the eneloop lineup, and a pro AA gives a lantern the longest run per charge.

Do eneloop C and D adapters give you more capacity?
No. The adapter is a shell around one AA cell, so the device runs on that AA’s charge, about 2,000 mAh for a standard eneloop.
Can you charge an eneloop AA inside a C or D adapter?
No. Take the AA out and charge it in an eneloop charger. Panasonic’s FAQ is direct about this.
